State of Vallyn, 988 A.D.
Kamos
State of the Continent
The continent of Kamos was hit hard by war before the events of the Dusk War which weakened them for the trouble that occurred. Most of the heavily populated areas of Kamos were spared from the demons as the target of the attack was in the wastes between the Charred Plains and the Dead Kingdom. In the last days of the Dusk War, the demons would attack several locations on the continent as they poured into the Material Plane unrestricted, but no damage comparable to that of the obelisk site or the Hell-Steps in Nonera occurred. As of 988 A.D., Kamos has been mostly rebuilt, but many sections of wilderness are still affected by chaotic influences, be they undead, elemental or otherwise.

Dragon Elves
- Following the destruction of their home isles during the Dusk War, the Dragon Elves relocated to Hesca, where they’ve established themselves again. This was in large parts made possible both due to the support from Hanadur, along with the assistance of the brave adventurers who saved much of the knowledge and many items important to the culture of the isles during their destruction. Serani Esta still leads them, and 985 A.D., the Dragon Elves and Rydel, who had previously held the reincarnating soul of Vitrix, managed to perform a ritual with assistance from Ahmya, giving the soul back to the Dragon Elves without Rydel and Syphax having to give up their lives. West Nonera
State of the Continent
Western Nonera was hit the hardest by the desolation caused by the demons. Near the Red Range, there had been the ever-present threat of the Hell-Steps which grew ever more a danger during the Dusk War. A lot of the territory near the Red Range was completely destroyed or corrupted by the demon presence and as such, much of it still uninhabitable to this day. Most of the established nation in Western Nonera were luckily able to avoid a prolonged confrontation with the demons as most were only affected by the worldwide demon incursion for a brief period of time. The exception to this was the Dragon Elf Isles, which were completely destroyed by the demon armies and then corrupted by the construction of the Obelisk. In the years of the Spellplague, the coasts surrounding the Dragon Elf Isles, which held one of the magical leylines convergences, were hit hard by magical storms, and the sea is still very dangerous to traverse to this day.

The land is still covered with demonic influence and many of those that seek access to the darker powers of the demons come here to claim a portion of it.

Abyss

,
Effects of the Spellplague
All effects of the Spellplague become more apparent the closer you are to the convergence points of the leylines. The further away, the weaker they become.
Effects on magic
-
Magic is no longer predictable. Spells often don’t behave as they should. Spells might fizzle out, or erupt with unintended force. In zones where the Spellplague hit hard, spells might even trigger wild magic surges.
-
The Weave is no longer constant - it “inhales and exhales.” At certain times, magic can suddenly become stronger or weaker, like arcane tides.
-
Magic items can be affected with the Spellplague too, gaining or losing properties. Cases of even gaining or losing sentience have been documented.
-
Clerics and paladins are less affected. Divine magic, drawn from gods rather than the Weave, remains mostly stable - though near plague zones, even faith can falter.
Effects on geography
The Border of the Dead Kingdom and the Charred Plains
- A land of scorched rivers and shifting bones, where spells warp the landscape daily.
Ruins of the Dragon Elf Isles
- Shattered archipelagos where the air itself mutates. Storms of blue fire are common here and roam the coasts.
The Ruin of Epida Amini
- Once a seat of learning, now a hollow wound where reality frays. Magic here is feral, predatory and it more often than not lashes out against creatures instead of the land.
Massive Terrain Alterations
- The Spellplague caused violent upheaval—mountains split, plains rose, and valleys collapsed. Floating landmasses (earthmotes) formed where the Weave surged upward.
Changelands
- Some areas, especially near leyline convergence points, became unstable “changelands,” where terrain shifts unpredictably and magic surges wildly.
Geographic Anomalies
-
Gravity fails or reverses in some zones
-
Rivers run uphill
-
Lakes boil or vanish overnight
-
Some regions change too frequently to be reliably mapped. Old roads disappear, landmarks are erased or moved.
Abandoned Regions
- Many cities and settlements near high-magic zones have been evacuated or lost due to terrain collapse or magical instability.
Effects on the Planes
-
Barriers between planes have weakened.
-
The Ethereal Plane “leaks” into the Material Plane in places. Ghosts can be seen at random, objects phase in and out, and mortals sometimes step into the Ethereal Plane with no way to return.
-
Places of Vallyn where barriers between were already weaker from the Merging or from before that even - The Charred Plains, The Silver Vale, The Hell-Steps, The Great Nomadic Plains, and The Sea between the Empire and the Latien Confederacy - are now even more prone to extraplanar incursions, especially from the Elemental Planes.
-
Dweomerheart, the realm of Mystra, was obliterated, it’s fragments scattering across the Astral Sea.
-
In the Astral Sea, Astral Dominions have begun to appear - distinct planes connected by the Astral Sea. In many ways, these are a plane in and of themselves, with each dominion being part of the greater Astral Sea.
Other effects
-
In areas affected by the Spellplague, Wildlife and Flora are prone to mutations.
-
Children all over Vallyn awaken as sorcerers regardless of their ancestry, affected by the Spellplague.
-
A new, rare metal has appeared - Weaveglass. Metals exposed to the wild magic of the Spellplague, and wildly unstable to work with.
-
Dead Zones appear - places where, contrary to changelands, magic is completely null. These dead zones extinguish any magical effects in them.
The Plague
-
The Spellplague doesn’t only twist magic - it changes flesh, mind, and soul. The Spellplague introduced two major physiological effects - plaguechanged and spellscarred.
-
Plaguechanged are individuals or creatures heavily mutated by direct exposure to raw Spellplague energy. These mutations often include unnatural growths, crystalline tumors, shifting flesh, and unstable anatomy. Mental instability is common, and many plaguechanged lose all sense of identity or function. Some, however, develop powerful and unique magical abilities.
-
Spellscarred are those who survive lighter exposure. They manifest glowing, arcane scars - usually blue or violet - that may react to magic or stress. These scars can grant enhanced magical abilities, magical resistance, or other unpredictable effects. Unlike plaguechanged, spellscarred individuals typically retain their minds.
-
Both conditions are most commonly found near leyline convergence points and plague zones. Incidents outside these areas are rare but not unheard of.
